Business paralyzed as hundreds of Kisumu residents begin mass action - FarmKenya Initiative

Business has been paralysed in parts of Kisumu as hundreds of protestors took to the streets to begin the mass action protests called by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition. The demonstrations began at 11 around am from Kondele to the office of the County Commissioner in the city's Central Business District. While chanting anti-government slogans, the protestors claimed that they are overburdened by the high cost of living and high taxation. Unlike past protests that quickly spiralled into violence, the protests were largely peaceful even as the protestors mocked police officers who were keeping an eye on them. Among the concerns of the residents was the high cost of living, high taxation, cost of education and tribalism among others. Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili, County Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro, Majority Whip in the county assembly Seth Kanga and Kondele ward MCA Joachim Oketch are among the leaders at the demonstrations. They were blocked by the police from going through the state lodge. The leaders said they will hold demonstrations at the County Commissioner's office every day until March 19 "We will demonstrate every day to present this memorandum to the county commissioner. We will also go to the state lodge. This is a peaceful demonstration and nobody should try mishandling our people. Our issues as outlined by our leaders must be handled," said MCA Kanga. The leaders presented the memorandum to Kisumu Central DCC Hussein Allanson. Mr Odinga has announced grand demos to start with the March 20 climax in Nairobi. In a hard-hitting statement Raila gave 15 reasons why they will be seeking to remove President Ruto from State House.
