Club Castaway's new vision should be thrown away (Editorial)

"Harmless in comparison." That's how a co-owner of Club Castaway describes his proposal to convert the strip joint in Whately into a cannabis store where retail staffers work topless. The year is young, but we see this as a front-runner for worst Pioneer Valley business idea of 2023. "Topless" isn't the right word for this. "Exploited" is. Nicholas Spagnola, a real estate investor from eastern Massachusetts, owns the club with Julius Sokol. If their business model isn't working, they would do everyone a favor by closing the book on the sexual objectification of women - not write a new chapter. In an interview with MassLive, Spagnola said that by dropping full nudity, and the sale of alcohol, things at the joint on routes 5 & 10 would be "a little mellower." Running the business might be easier for owners, and more palatable to town officials. But make no mistake: In no way are these guys thinking about what's right for employees. Spagnola had the gall in the interview to imagine himself in the place of women on the shop floor. There's been no mention of hiring men to work shirtless. "I think it'd be a fun place for the right person to work," he said. Fun to be ogled by customers? Fun for a candidate to be evaluated by men for her suitability as an object in a Valley home to two of the nation's finest women's colleges? Yes, he did say "right person," so that narrows the field to candidates willing to take the job, after facing discrimination on the basis of age and sexual appeal. We're not sure who they'd be, if this notion wins approvals. People work in retail because they need to pay their bills. The closing of cannabis stores in the region suggests customer needs are being met. The club thinks its novel plan will pull shoppers from outside the area; locally, isn't it fair to say the concept writes off half the customer base? Weed stores stand out, and succeed, based on their selection of strains and products, along with the ability of staff to field questions, advise buyers and compete in an increasingly price-conscious market. Savvy cannabis retailers have created spa-like spaces that say "wellness." The plan in Whately? It values a shopper's amusement over employee dignity. That's a tone-deaf vibe in this emerging industry. The future Club Castaway envisions is, in the light of day, a pounding hangover.
